The Problem Solving and Decision Making (PSDM) series of modules is a certifiable national qualification of the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ).

Course Objective of WSQ Problem Solving & Decision Making (PSDM):
To impart skill, attitude and knowledge on:
1. How to recognize symptoms analyze impacts identify causes to a problem.
2. Generating ideas using divergent and convergent techniques and select appropriate solutions.
3. Develop effective action plans and formulate preventive measures to avoid recurrence of problem
4. How to make decisions by identifying and analyzing the impact all factors involved.

Course Details:

1. Anticipate and identify symptoms of problems

1.1  Recognize problem area

· Define what is a problem

· Using logical deduction, anticipate problem via change, deviation from SOPs

· Identify symptoms that could lead to potential problems

1.2 Describe and assess the impact of a problem

· Identify foreseeable deviations from norm and SOPs based on the symptom identified

· Able to conduct investigations and list clearly accurate findings

· Identify impact of the problem

2. Generate and evaluate solutions to a problem

2.1  Generate and select ideas to solve a problem

· Identify possible causes to the problem based on the reading of the symptoms

· Generate practical ideas relevant to the root causes of the problem

· Demonstrates lateral and vertical creative thinking during idea generation

2.2  Evaluate selected ideas for possible solutions

· Generate pertinent criteria to select ideas for solutions

· Evaluate the strengths and limitations of the selected solutions

3. Make a decision and take responsibility for it

3.1 Develop a plan to implement the selected solution

·Communicate the preferred solution using the most suitable mode of communication

·Develop an action plan to implement the selected solution

3.2  Evaluate and take ownership of the implemented solution

· Evaluate effectiveness of the implemented solution

· Locate source of failure should the implemented solution be ineffective

· Initiate rectification actions to restore efficiency of the affected work process

· Reflect on learning points that can be extracted from the experience

· Identify preventive measure(s) to avoid similar occurrence in the future

Certification to Participant (Statement of Attainment)
